Characters: Janis
Setting: Sunday night, near the woods.
Rating: SFW(?)
Summary: Janis sees the one eyed one horned purple people eater unpleasantness.

There is a story Janis' grandfather told her over Thanksgiving, when the laced eggnog and coffee had gone to many rounds about the last season's lightening bug. It is said (by him at least) that the very last lightening bug contains a special kind of magic. For the last bug has no true love to go home to- and if you grant the poor little fella a chance to spend his last time on earth anything but alone- his last flash will grant your heart's desire.

Janis' was easy, a date to winter formal.

The trick was however, that it might have been too late! After all, all the bugs were dead up north, and they were fewer and far in between down here. The grounds were vacant, and much of the closer areas were as well. This was her last hope- the area next to the woods, and her eyes were glued fixed to the grass, waiting, hoping for that one little twinkle that she could capture in her hands and wish away.

There were certainly things flying around the air in the area that Janis was looking. But they were just regular flies. They seemed to be concentrated around one area of grass, beneath a medium-sized bush.

The unfortunate thing was that should Janis actually find that lightning bug, she may wish for something else entirely. Through the darkness, there were bits of white that could be easily seen by the lights from campus. White, and deep red, so dark as to be almost black in the dim lighting.

The two telling colors are not what she first notices, her eyes so trained for that little bug's movement it is instead, the flies. Well, where one goes, there ought to be many, right? Flies and lightening bugs were cousins after all, she was sure of it. "Here buggy buggy buggy.... heeeeere buggy buggy."

"I don't want to go alone buggy buggy buggy... you don't want to be alone buggy..."

She was still a few yards off when the illuminated colors catch her eye, pulling out her short wand she muttered "lumos", hoping to see whatever it was that got spilt across the grounds. If it was paint- well that was just uncool, she was wearing her favorite tennis after all.

The smell of decaying flesh would be noticeable once Janis got up closer to where they lay. That sweet and bitter scent of rotting meat in the air around where the bits of flesh and bone sat on the grass by the forest edge. The flies were around the site, buzzing as they were wont to do, landed on the decaying bits indiscriminately.

Mostly, the small pile appeared to be bits of, well, meat. Dark brown, and with what appeared to be some sort of sticky liquid on them. The white bits looked to be pieces of gnawed upon bone. Most disturbing, possibly, were the two human fingers, clearly visible atop the rotting flesh.

Well, that certainly isn't a firefly, and it sure as heck wasn't what Janis expected when she lit up her wand. It was the smell that hit her first, like a brick wall it almost knocked her over. Luckily, it wasn't that but the sight of dead things that did instead. Three stumbles back and she was on her butt, staring longer than she wanted, noticing the... bits she wish she could ignore.

Janis? She was going to be scrambling up to run now, ripping out the knee of her stockings and loosing a shoe on the way. She probably should have headed for the headmaster's office, or to the nurse, or to the cops or well. Anywhere. But she wasn't- her first order of business was very simple- get away from that body.

Fuck that firefly nonsense.
